This biopic focuses on the later years of one of the masters of British painting, J.M.W. Turner, taking in the death of his father, and relationships with two women; one his devoted, long-suffering housekeeper, the other a seaside landlady who eventually becomes his companion. Having trained as a painter for two years, Timothy Spall gives an extraordinary performance as Turner, extracting the many flaws and layers behind the genius. Although fittingly filming on a larger canvas, with strikingly beautiful landscapes that emulate rather than recapture Turner’s own work, Mike Leigh characteristically focuses on the domestic, rather than the masterworks themselves. The result is a bawdy, eccentric and fascinating portrait of an iconic cultural figure, a crucial period in art history, and a transformative time in British society.
This absorbing drama centres around the creation of the famous painting of the same name by 17th century Dutch master Johannes Vermeer.
