Synopsis

Sensitively adapted from the acclaimed Colm Tóibín novel, Brooklyn tells the story of young Irish immigrant Eilis, who leaves behind her friends and family to seek new opportunities in 1950s New York. After finding suitable accommodation and employment at a glamorous department store, Eilis overcomes her homesickness and soon falls in love with the dashing Antonio. But when events back home force her to return to Ireland, she is faced with a heartbreaking choice between duty and love, torn between two lives. Unashamedly melodramatic, rich in elegant period detail and impeccably performed, this is above all a relatable story of a young woman striving to define her identity.

What our educators say

"It really is a chance for us to open children's minds to the power of film not just as a vehicle for entertainment but also as a way in to understanding their own world and the worlds of people whose lives are very different."
