Synopsis

After marrying a successful Parisian writer known as Willy, a young Sidonie-Gabrielle Colette leaves rural France for bohemian Paris at the dawn of the 20th century. Noticing Colette’s creative talent and wit – and with their finances in trouble due to his extravagant spending - Willy persuades her to write a series of novels which are to be released under his name. While the success of the semi-autobiographical novel series ‘Claudine’ pushes the pair into the limelight, Colette’s frustration at her lack of recognition grows. With the support of subversive artist ‘Missy’, Colette begins to fight for her creative ownership and freedom from her husband, defying gender roles and traditional notions of sexuality along the way. This is an insightful introduction to the novelist and the challenges faced by young women writers, while also offering a fresh take on the period-drama.
