Jared Earmons lives in Arkansas with his religious parents, and attends the church of his Baptist preacher father. After a harrowing experience with another boy, Jared is questioned by his mother and father, revealing to them that he thinks he’s gay. Agreeing to attend a 12-day conversion therapy centre in an attempt to change his ways to please his parents, he soon realises that the staff’s methods are forceful and unpleasant. As the other boys in the centre each use their own coping strategy to make it through – some genuinely want to be “cured”, others are just keeping up appearances – Jared looks back on the formative experiences that have led him to the centre and the complex relationships in his life. Based on the memoirs of the same name, ‘Boy Erased’ is a hard-hitting drama which explores themes around sexuality, religion and family.
