Synopsis

Amateur filmmaker Bing Liu decides to capture much of his youth on video, alongside the tricks and stunts of his skateboarding friends, in their Rust Belt home town of Rockford, Illinois. As he hones his filmmaking skills over a decade and the three protagonists come of age in different ways – 17 year-old Keire gets his first job, 23 year-old Zack becomes a father for the first time with his on-off girlfriend – the documentary asks serious questions about friendship, responsibility and growing up. The film also explores Keire, Zack and Bing’s family life, candidly speaking about tough topics such as domestic abuse, grief and race as well as exploring modern day masculinity with real maturity. Director Bing Liu balances the personal and professional throughout their journey from adolescence to adulthood, with ‘Minding the Gap’ full of optimistic sequences of escapism through their mutual passion of skateboarding.

What our educators say

"We are currently screening The Wizard of Oz, profound film that it is, and the last film Wall-E. It's been rewarding observing the KS1 6 year olds run the gamut of emotions from wonder to sadness to joy. "
