Synopsis

Evan Hansen suffers from social anxiety and so his therapist suggests that he writes letters to himself which look forward to the positive parts of each day. In one of his letters which mentions his feelings for classmate Zoe, Evan also ponders whether anyone would even notice if he wasn’t around. Zoe’s brother Connor stumbles upon the letter and pockets it, leading to Evan becoming increasingly anxious about what he may do with it. However, the entire community is shocked when they hear that Connor has taken his own life. After Evan’s letter is found on his body, it is mistakenly believed to be a suicide note written from Connor to Evan. Connor’s parents therefore believe that Evan must have been his best friend, and so Evan enlists his family friend Jared to help him amplify the lie, writing fake backdated letters together. But when Evan’s inspiring speech at Connor’s memorial goes viral, he soon finds himself in over his head. Based on the hit Broadway musical, ‘Dear Evan Hansen’ is a timely coming-of-age story which explores topics around mental health, social media, and the importance of family in all its forms.
