Synopsis

This film tells the true story of the Mighty Mites, the football team of a Texas orphanage in Forth Worth who, during the Great Depression, end up making it to the state championships. Though their journey begins without shoes or even a football to practice with, the arrival of a legendary high school coach with a mysterious past, Rusty Russell, gives the team the kickstart they need. After shocking his colleagues by leaving his privileged position to take up a coaching job at the orphanage, he recognises that his scrawny players won’t be able to compete physically with the other teams. Rusty therefore develops innovative strategies that would come to define modern American football, with his underdog team’s resilient spirit becoming an inspiration to their city, state and nation, even catching the eye of President Franklin D. Roosevelt along the way. Based on the New York Times best-seller, ’12 Mighty Orphans’ is a celebration of being proud of who you are and where you come from.

What our educators say

"We are currently screening The Wizard of Oz, profound film that it is, and the last film Wall-E. It's been rewarding observing the KS1 6 year olds run the gamut of emotions from wonder to sadness to joy. "
