Set over the course of a single evening at a house party in west London in 1980, young Martha finds freedom, community and romance on the dance-floor. Although it’s loosely a romantic drama, mood and atmosphere take center stage over plot. Through long soul and dub musical interludes, with camera work that snakes through the dancers, the film captures a particular moment in time for first and second generation West Indian youth. Lovers Rock is a sensory love letter to a time in Black British History where racism on the streets and clubs gave rise to house parties as a safer space to go out.
