Synopsis

A beguiling blend of fantasy and drama seen through the eyes of a remarkable child, this beautifully shot story of an isolated community threatened by a storm puts a unique twist on Southern Gothic storytelling. Six-year-old Hushpuppy is given to pondering her place in the universe, making her ultra-aware of the strange and wonderful world around her in the Louisiana bayou (the wetlands outside of New Orleans). The little girl learns about survival skills from her spirited dad and at school, her own imagination allowing her to soar above everyday hardships. But as her community is transformed by heavy flooding, Hushpuppy and her neighbours face a surreal new reality and must muster an even greater resilience to save the place they call home.

What our educators say

"We are currently screening The Wizard of Oz, profound film that it is, and the last film Wall-E. It's been rewarding observing the KS1 6 year olds run the gamut of emotions from wonder to sadness to joy. "
