As recently as the 1950s nobody knew anything about the lives and behaviour of chimps. With no formal training or degree, and having to fight to be taken seriously because of her gender, Jane Goodall changed all that. Her experiences living amongst the animals in their habitat revolutionised the way we view and think of the natural world. This documentary uses 16mm footage captured at the time by her companion and husband Hugo van Lawick to look back at her life. It intimately captures how Jane secured the animals’ trust to the point that she even began raising a family in the jungle. Whilst some of the chimp behaviour is very funny, other moments are shocking in their brutality, with the film always reminding us of the complexity of nature, as well as the ongoing threat it faces due to human action.
A humbling and eye-opening documentary that skillfully enlightens our perceptions of both primate behaviour and human nature.
